I suppose that’s no problem if you choose to read the book cover-to-cover, but it’s a serious flaw in a reference book. It turns out there is an index, but it took me a while to stumble on it, since there’s no table of contents to link me to it.

Once I found the index, I tried to bookmark it, but I can’t navigate back to my bookmark in this Kindle book as I can in others.

The author mentions in her introduction that the book is also available in PDF format, so I thought that might be a better option if it includes a table of contents. With that in mind, I went to her web site to see if she offers a discount to buyers of one format who decide they also want another format. As I said, the information may be great but, frankly, I’ll never know because it’s too difficult to find in the Kindle book.

And, of course, the difference in purchase options is downright annoying. My advice is to buy the paperback edition or, if you prefer an e-book format, purchase it directly from the author’s web site. Once it arrived, I went to the author’s web site and registered the book to become a “premium member” on her site. Within a day she e-mailed to confirm my membership. I downloaded and installed the ePub edition to my iPad and it works fine, complete with a table of contents.

Now that I’ve had some time with the book in both paperback and ePub forms, I must agree with other reviewers that the content is excellent. She covers each topic thoroughly and clearly, with plenty of illustrations.

I’ve already uncovered information I searched for in vain in other Lightroom books and videos. I wouldn’t use this book to learn Lightroom I recommend Laura Shoe’s video series for that , but it’s the most in-depth reference I’ve come across.

Because the content is so good and the ePub version works fine on my iPad, I’m upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. I still can’t give it 5 stars, but only because of the problems and inconvenience I experienced with the Kindle edition.

I needed the latter, because I already had 19, photos spanning 16 years, and I wanted to know what choices to make during the importation process to minimize the down-stream effort to organize them. As soon as I received the program, I immediately imported all of my photos and began attaching keywords wrong!

However, after reading the chapter on importing and understanding the consequences of my initial choices copy vs. All of the video examples on the Lightroom web site demonstrate techniques on small collections of newly-imported photos. They don’t address the implications of importing large collections that may contain duplicates scattered across many file folders.

I highly recommend this book if you are just starting with Lightroom or if you want to minimize the work of organizing a large collection of photos. I also found this book useable in the Kindle form, which was not the case with the other book. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

This is the book I wish now I’d bought first. It is well laid out, clear and concise and written in uncomplicated language that people like myself can understand. Gone are the side comments and leaping around chapters to find relevant detail. It goes straight to the point to get things working and only then brings in the finesse should you wish to delve deeper into what you have just accomplished.

There is of course a fast track reference keyed into the various chapters to take you onwards should you feel the need for speed. Personally I find it so absorbing and such a relief to find a down to earth and practical reference that explains things in an orderly way. If you were struggling with LR this is the book for you. You are not just buying a book, you are purchasing a support service. When my copy arrived I saw that I could sign up as a member and get help from the author without any further charge, ‘yeah right’ I thought I’m sure that will happen!

I registered my copy and set about working my way through the pages, the writer doesn’t think I’m a total idiot and doesn’t think I’m a fully trained Lightroom expert.

When I did get an issue I couldn’t work out I emailed her on the dedicated address and lo and behold within 5 minutes she replied with the answer – highly impressed!! She must go down the shops at some point so I cannot give any assurances she will always reply that quickly but this kind of help with such a complex and involved piece of software is priceless and without equal.

The book is written clearly and is well illustrated, most importantly you are supplied with newsletter updates which keep you up to date with the many changes, improvements and fixes Adobe come up with. If you are a Lightroom CC user then in my opinion it doesn’t matter how proficient you are or think you are this book is invaluable and worth every penny. Hopefully one day she’ll do one for Photoshop.

It will save you MUCH headscratching, cups of coffee – or something stronger. The probability is, you type in the keyword – and hey presto, there before you, in words we can all comprehen – and more importantly, make WORK, on our own small efforts at photography – is the ANSWER. I’m very glad I did buy the large and in charge book – because Adobe have surprise, surprise “improved” the import dialogue Fear not – it’s all in Ms Brampton’s book!

Forums, for every level of expertise from starter to wannabee David Bailey. To give you a taster, however, she also produces such useful “freebies” as a “Getting Started Guide”. Vist “The Lightroom Queen” at: [ Report abuse. I was looking to buy Scott Kelby’s book I’ve bought his books in the past and came across Lightroomforums. This book is so instructive and written in a logical easy to follow and understand style. I admit I did have a couple of initial questions concerning basic organisation and emailed Victoria direct.

Her rationale and answers on Lightroom management quickly put me at ease, giving me the right LR mindset. Where else can one receive such prompt and constructive response? Though my Lightroom journey is really only just starting I can nevertheless recommend this book wholeheartedly.

One person found this helpful. I have been using Adobe elements for a few years and a few months ago I purchased Adobe lightroom 6, and it suits my need perfectly. I purchased Scott Kelbys book on lightroom 6, having previously purchased a book he published on elements. Kelbys books are good but I have to say this book in my view is exceptional in every respect and is THE lightroom book. All features of lightroom are fully and explained in detail, all the questions I have are answered, if I have a further question I can email.

A few niggles: one must flip between hard and electronic copies to tie loose ends together; wisely, the author has paginated the full-color page electronic supplement pdf format sequentially so that you can add new page numbers to the book’s index. Although the basics of keywording and image retrieval are covered adequately, this section could dig a bit deeper to help you find that Norman castle showing Donna, but not Billie; for the time being, that search remains a self-help travel adventure.

Readers might appreciate a table of keyboard shortcuts at the end of a module’s chapter as a welcome counterpoint to Adobe’s drearily exhaustive tabulation. A modern Lightroom “Bible”, it serves equally well as introductory guide, advanced learning tool, or reference guide. First users will get up to speed quickly, aided by well-placed screenshots; high-volume professionals will find the industrial strength workflow and file organization tips invaluable.

The first software manual that I ever read, cover to cover, was Word 3. Never again, until this book, which is actually not a software manual, have I read any software tutorial cover to cover. Amazon tells me I have purchased products to date and submitted 0 reviews. I do remember making a negative review on a product, but apparently it was not recorded. Most products I purchase already have too many reviews and there is nothing for me to add.

I’ve read Photoshop Lightroom by Martin Evening, cover to cover while sitting in front of my computer. Lightroom was a surprise for me I don’t negate Aperature by Apple. Photoshop Lightroom by Martin Evening takes the reader through the process of using Lightroom. If you read Martin’s work carefully he also leads you to use Lightroom’s controls through step by step instructions on photo adjustments. I have to admit that I was using Adobe Photoshop in a very basic way.

I am now adjusting photos in Lightroom, very elegantly, by learning from Martin Evening’s instruction. A very good instructional text for those of us who need an expert to direct us on usage. I would also recomend Lightroom. Lightroom is so beautiful, if you take more than a few photos. Martin Evening has written a first-rate book about Lightroom. It is clear, comprehensive, and well-written.

I was anxious to get started with the program when it was released and so I purchased this book and also one by Scott Kelby. Kelby’s book is generally good and I found it somewhat useful in a few instances to read the two together, but Evening has written the better book and it stands alone very nicely.

Soon after Lightroom 1. Evening and Peachpit Press are to be commended for dealing with this situation by making a page free update to the book available as a PDF file on the Peachpit web site. This update is also excellent and very thorough. By contrast, the update for Kelby’s book — in similar format — is only 28 pages long.

I’m very pleased with Evening’s book and I think you will be, too. Martin Evening’s books are very thorough, and this is no exception. He goes through each aspect of Adobe Lightroom in great detail, so much so, that it takes great concentration to stay with it for any length of time. Like many others, I ordered this book because it was one of the first one’s out; I’ve now ordered Scott Kelby’s book and it will be interesting to compare them.

Aside from the content of the book there is one aspect of it makes it very difficult for me to use. This is the fact that all of the screen shot illustrations are so excruciatingly small that I must use a magnifying glass to examine them carefully, even under a very adequate light. This is not a criticism of Mr. Evening, but of his publisher, Adobe Press.

As a book designer, I can say that trying to use illustrations that are not completely legible is bad practice. Martin Evening is a photographer and the author of a very popular Photoshop manual one that has been updated and enlarged with every new version of PS. Since he is part of the Adobe test team for PS, it seems logical that he has been tapped to write one of the first books on Lightroom.

The book itself is very good, covering Lighroom in detail note that Lightroom is feature-rich, but nothing like PS. And the book is recommended with a caveat.

And that’s the bad news. Shortly after LR was released, Adobe released v1. Other features were also added to LR. The bad news is mitigated by the fact that the publisher Peachpit Press is going to post a pdf of a page update! The update and the book should now be considered a set, rather than the book as a standalone. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

Martin Evening is one of the most respected writers for digital photography. I haven’t read any of his books before, though have one of Scott Kelby’s books. I must say I prefer Martin’s style to Scott’s. Scott tells you in easy steps how to accomplish different tasks, though doesn’t explain the whys. Martin also explains how to complete various tasks, though explains why you carry out the various steps, to enable you to understand how to change the steps to achieve other results.

This book is the reference that should come with Lighroom. I’ve been using Lightroom since the PC beta came out, and over time have learnt to use much of the tools, but this book fills in a lot of the gaps, and extends my knowledge and speed using the application. If you do not process many images, and got Lightroom to catalogue your images, then you will learn from the book, but you will gain so much more if you process large numbers of images especially RAW and want to refine your workflow, learn how to make the most of the cataloguing offered by Lightroom.

In short, if you want to spend less time behind your monitor, and more time behind the camera, buy this book. It’s in depth, and yet beautifully clear, and laid out. The content that’s in the book isn’t bad, doesn’t waffle too much, and goes about things in a very practical and informative manner and would be an essential purchase were it not for the fact that it hasn’t kept up with the software.

There are some sections that only tell half the story or less , particularly those on noise reduction, sharpening, exporting and keyword management. The publishers provide a pdf update, but it’s a supplement rather than the whole book and that makes it awkward because it means there’s no single definitive resource.

My recommendation would be to try and make do with the help available from the Adobe WEB site and buy this book when it’s been updated to reflect the current software version. This is particularly so, given that the first beta of version 2. The publishers stuck a label to the front of the book mentioning the update. Fine except that it’s next to impossible to remove without either leaving a sticky patch or damaging the cover A little research reveals that the author has been involved with Adobe Photoshop for many years, and also as a beta tester of Lightroom since its inception, so the reader could anticipate a very detailed knowledge of Lightroom’s features.

This book portrays exactly that, and in a way that neither insults the intelligence of the seasoned professional nor places too many expectations on the beginner. This is extremely hard to achieve but I feel Martin Evening has got the balance just right in producing a first rate book that will suit most people. Furthermore, there are numerous tips on techniques that the author uses, so a lot of invaluable working knowledge has been included. The author has also provided a free page PDF that describes the considerable changes made in version 1.

This is available online from the publishers, Peachpit. In my opinion, it is also suitable for ‘savvy’ beginners. If you really feel that ‘Lightroom for Dummies’ would be more appropriate, then start off with something at that level before you buy this book. Without doubt one of the best books on Lightroom available. Highly recommended. Buy with confidence. This book and Andy Rouse’s book on Understanding Raw Photography are all you need to grasp far more than the basics and to be able to use RAW photos in Lightroom competently and with confidence.
